Laos and Cambodia Cycling from Luang Prabang to Angkor (21 Days / 20 Nights)

Trip Profile:

This Laos and Cambodia Cycling Tours combines the cultural interests of the two countries, starting from the Laos World Heritage Site Luang Prbang to Cambodia World Heritage Site of Angkor Complex. This cycling tour take you through Laos from North to South via the capital Vientiane. From Vientiane to Pakse there is not much interest to see and it is also a long way to cycle. So we recommend to take the flight to Pakse. Then we cycle follow the Mekong River to Cambodia. The cycling route we have taken are interesting with nice scenery of the 4 Thousand Islands. After that, we cross the border to Cambodia by bike and the visa is issued at the border.

In Cambodia, we continue to cycle along the Mekong River to see the endangered Irrawady Dolphines and experience the cycling at the highland Mondulkiri to visit the minority hill trbie people before headingtoAngkor following the Mekong River. We cycle 1,237km on mix tarmac road anddirtroad. Through our research, we have known many enjoyable and fun off roads which we use for this trip. However, there are still a few tarmac roads which we cannot avoid but the sealed roads we use more quiet and safe to cycle.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive in Luang Prabang
Arrive in Luang Prabang. Welcome by our guide to transfer to the hotel. Free day to wander around this world heritage town. Bike fitting and briefing on the tour. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 2: Luang Prabang to Phoukoun (78Km)
After checking your bikes, depart from Luang Prabang cycle the way to Kiew Ka Cham passing on the mountain road passing lush forest and many small H’Mong villages that sit dwarfed by the amazing landscape of limestonemountains that surround them. Then we transfer 66km to Phoukoun. Dinner and overnight in Phoukoun. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Phoukoun – Vang Vieng (75 Km)
Breakfast in Kasi. Today, transfer the first hilly part for 45 minutes and we cycle the 75km to Vang Vieng hopefully arriving early afternoon, spend afternoon to go caving or tubing on the Nam Song River or just relax. The ride to Vang Vieng is a relatively easy day traveling through the lush green of rice fields. Vang Vieng is set in a prime location. Surrounded by limestone peaks, caves and rivers this town see its fair share of travelers but for good reason. Overnight in Vang Vieng. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Vang Vieng – Nam Ngum Lake (85km)
Breakfast at our hotel in Vang Vieng. Today we cycle from our hotel in Vang Vieng to spend the day cycling mainly downhill to Phong Hong and to the Nam Ngum Lake a man-made lake, formed by the damn. Dinner and spend the night near the lake. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Nam Ngum Lake – Vientiane (85km)
After breakfast cycle the last part of the journey to Vientiane the road becomes mainly flat for this ride and you should be in Vientiane late afternoon. If time permits, visit National Museum and former Royal Palace. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Vientiane – Pakse
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport for domestic flight to Pakse. Afternoon, city tour around Pakse or free at leisure and relax before continuing our next cycling adventure. Pakse is the only city in Southern Part of Laos which has the airport and connection with the tourist attraction in Southern part of Laos. Dinner and Overnight in Laos. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Pakse - Wat Phou - Champasak (70km)
After breakfast, cycle along the Mekong river. Have a water stop the first 20km to enjoy the fresh fruit, snack and drink.  Then we follow the Mekong river and cross the ferry and continue cycling leaving the Mekong river on the backdrop. There, appear the Wat Phou temple on the foot of the Champasak hill. It is a 12th century temple built by a great Khmer King Jayavarman VII. Visit the temple 45 minutes to 1 hour. Afternoon, we cycle to Champasak. Dinner and overnight in Champasak. (B,L,D)

Day 8: Champasak - Se Pian National Biodiversity Center (60km)

Breakfast in Champasak. We fill in the water and be ready to get on the bike to cycle to Se Pian Biodiversity Conservation Center located near Cambodia border to Rattanakiri province. Visit the community of the ethnic minority. Enjoy the lunch in the community. Afternoon, cycle back to Don Daeng. Dinner and overnight in Don Daeng. (B,L,D)

Day 9: Se Pian - 4 Thousand Islands (50km)
Breakfast in Se Pian. Today, we cycle to visit 4 Thousand Islands known as Si Phan Don in Laos. The 4 Thousand Islands situated on the Mekong River. Enjoy lunch at the 4 Thousand Island. Make sure we keep the empty bottle of water and can in the rubbish bin to keep the environment clean. After lunch, we cycle to Don Khong. Dinner and overnight in Don Khong. (B,L,D)

Day 10: Don Khong – Stung Treng (80km)
After breakfast, today we cycle along the 4 Thousand Islands. Cross the ferry and visit the wonderful water fall at the border with Cambodia. Immigration process. Say Goodbye to our Laos guide and driver. You can get Cambodian visa at the border at USD20 per person. Please take 1 passport size photo for the visa. Cycle the last 57km to Stung Treng. Dinner and overnight in Stung Treng. (B,L,D)

Day 11: Stung Treng – Irrawady Dolphin - Kratie (75km)

Breakfast in Stung Treng. Cycle along the Mekong River on dirt road for 30km. We transfer on the National Road as we cannot avoid this part. Cycle the last 45km on the back road along the Mekong River. The road is sealed but small with less traffic than the National road. It is also interesting to see the villages and scenery along the Mekong. We stop halfway to take the boat trip at Prek Kampi to spot for endangered fresh water Irraway Dolphin. If you miss the chance to see the Dolphin at 4 Thousand Islands, you will be able to see at Prek Kampi for sure. After the boat trip, cycle the last 23km to Kratie. Dinner and overnight in Kratie. Day 12: Kratie – Mondulkiri (Northern Hill Tribes Territory) (80km)
After breakfast, we transfer about 2 hours via Snoul to Keo Sima. Along the road, we can see some of the rubber plantation initiated by the French. Then we start cycling with some uphills. The scenery after lunch is the best in Cambodia for cycling. We can view the pine forest and endless hill with green grass. We arrive in Mondulkiri and check in the hotel. Late afternoon, we cycle around the town and go up hills about 300 meter altitude high to view the sunset on top of the hill at the Sea-Forest to see how amazing the nature is.  Dinner and overnight in Mondulkiri. Day 13: Sen Monorom – Bou Sra Water Fall (Cycling 77km)
Breakfast in Sen Monorom.  Fill in the water, start cycling out off Sen Monorom. Soon, we get to the dirt road passing the coffee plantation. We stop to have a quick visit at the plantation. Then continue on some of the sealed and dirt road through the jungle. Stop and relax to enjoy the truly nature. Then go to Bou Sra waterfall. Enjoy the lunch nearby the water fall. Enjoy swimming at the water fall and take some photos with Phnong minority clothes.  Afternoon, return back to Sen Monorom for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 14: Sen Monorom – Elephant Valley (20 + 20km) Walk 5km
Breakfast in Sen Monorom. Then we cycle 10km to Elephant Valley. This is a rescue center to protect the elephants from trafficking. You have a chance of full day volunteer to work in this Elephant Valley to take care of the elephants. The staff at the project will guide you how to do the job. Lunch at the valley. Another option, if you do not want to volunteer at the Elephant valley, we cycle to visit Damrey Choun villages near by Sen Monorom and trek 5km to visit the forest and water fall. Dinner and overnight in Sen Monorom.

Day 15: Mondulkiri-Chlong-Kampong Cham (85km)
Breakfast at the hotel. We transfer to Chlong. Then start cycling along Mekong River. This back road is nice for cycling to see close to real life experience of the local people who earn their living along the Mekong River. Most of them earn their living by farming and fishing. We cycle pass a few Muslim community. Then we cross the Mekong River by ferry at Stung Trong. Continue to cycle another 33km on some dirt road and sealed road to Kampong Cham. Dinner and overnight in Kampong Cham.

Day 16: Kampong Cham – Kampong Thom (78km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Kampong Cham is one of the biggest province produce fruits and rubber. The land and Mekong River provides rich of resource for farming. We cycle 50km before lunch. After lunch we cycle pass some of the rubber plantation which was initiated by French in 19th century. First they brought the rubber plant from South America but could not survive in Cambodia weather and land. Later on they brought the rubber plant from Malaysia and could survive. After lunch, we cycle the last 28km to Kampong Thmor and transfer for 45 minutes on National Road No.6 to avoid busy traffic to Kampong Thom. Dinner and overnight in Kampong Thom.

Day 17: Kampong Thom – Sambor Prei Kuk - Siem Reap (67km)
Breakfast at the hotel. We cycle to visit Sambor Prei Kuk pre-Angkorian temple complex. Most of the temples in this complex built by brick between (615-650). Sambor Prei Kuk was served as the capital before Angkor period during the Chenla Kingdom. After visiting, we cycle to Prek Pros Bridge for lunch at local restaurant. After lunch, we transfer 2 hours to Siem Reap. Check in at the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 18: Siem Reap - Free Day (Breakfast only)
Breakfast at the hotel. Siem Reap free day to explore on your own. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 19: Siem Reap-Angkor Complex (35km by bicycle)
Depart from the hotel on the main road and cycling throughAngkor pass check point. Cycling through the shady road with a little pumping because of thea few pot-holes. There you will begin to see Kravan temple, Banteay Kdei, and stop at the famous Ta Phrom, embraced by the roots of enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers. Visit Ta Phrom (45 minutes-1 hour). It was built in 12th century by the famous King Jayavarvan VII indicated to his mother. While clearing back the forest archaeologists decided to leave the vegetation of Ta Phrom in place to serve as a reminder of how the original discoverers found it and the other Angkor temples.

cambodia_adventuresMany of the trees have grown around and through the remains and soar high above the temples.Continue the cycling through small circuit passing Ta Keo temple, Chao Say Tevoda, Tommanon before reaching to Angkor Thom city. There you will see, Terrace of Leper King, Terrace of Elephant, Baphoun, Phimean Akas. Stop at Bayon temple and start the visit (45 minutes-1 hour). Angkor Thom built by Cambodia's great king, Jayavarman VII. Then visit the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat. It is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. Angkor Wat is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five beehive-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of massive 'temple mountain' dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu.Overnight in Siem Reap. (B,L,D)

Day 20: Tonle Sap Lake - Kampong Phluk (56km)
Depart from the hotel, crossing the bridge at Old Market to cycle 15km toward Rolous Group. The first 2km, is on the tarmac road toward the bus station. Then, passing the rice field and the village. cycling to Tonle Sap Lake passing small road along the river through villages, pagodas and schools. This road is good for cycling as to avoid the busy traffic. After cycling 8km, turn right across the bridge to the main road as there is no further access on the small road. Continue cycling toward the lake about 3km (July-December) where the boat stop. (Note: January-June, the water is low and the boat will stop further 3km). Board on the boat to visit the village on water, school, fishing farm. After 1 hour boat drive. Return the Siem Reap on the main road to avoid cycling the same road. Afternoon, free at leisure to relax. Dinner and overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 21: Siem Reap Departure
Breakfast at the hotel. Free until transfer to the airport for departure flight. Tour Ends

Road Surface

This tour follows asphalt roads, and one dirt road passing the countryside and the rice field. The back road along the river and village is small but good enough for cycling, less busy. A little bit sandy, narrow road, tiny lane, rural road along river side.
